One Sunday the 8th and 9th grade children descended at சங்கமேஸ்வரர் கோயில் in Bhavani, 60 km from Salem, joining many dedicated devotees for உழவாரப் பணி. Armed with 25 broomsticks, brushes, buckets, soap oil, tooth brushes, Nirma powder etc., they worked energetically like Shiva’s பூதகணங்கள் with the other volunteers from 9 to 5 with a break for lunch in between and a holy dip at the end of the day. By any stretch of imagination it was not a picnic and chit chat or small talk was not on the cards! The task was energy sapping, and it was gratifying to see these teenagers engage with zeal. Their effort came in for a lot of appreciation from the adult volunteers they worked with. When sharing about their experience, a child said that henceforth she should participate when her home was being cleaned, something she had never done before. Another student said whenever she began to tire she would remind herself that she was cleaning the abode of the Lord himself. But what took us aback was a request from a boy to give more such opportunities.
